What are the various types of Research with its Examples?

 TYPES OF RESEARCH —

1. Basic Research — for the sake of enhancing knowledge. Basic or pure research is done with the intension of overpowering the unknown.

2. Applied Research — or practical research is termed as need based research having high practical relevance. Aim is to find solutions to the problems being faced by the society, government or the business.

3. Empirical Research — here first hand data is collected and analysed. Also referred to as Experimental research. The researcher tries to manipulate the independent variables within the research design and study it's effect on the variables under study.

  • Example - The findings from such research are extrapolated to hold true for the world at large e.g. study of effect of a Depreciating Dollar or Indian Export Industry.
4. Qualitative Research - involve study o human behaviour. Also called as motivation research.
   Example - an opinion survey carried out by a firm to find the response of the customers with respect to products , advertisements
Need - in the research where responses are subjective. 
5. Quantitative Research - here the results are subject to intensive quantitative and statistical analysis.
   Example - a research conducted to document the demographic profile of an area and establish pattern between various parameters like - income and residential area, education and job profile etc.
6. Simulation Research - it involves the creation of artificial environment which is very similar to the real environment.
7. Longitudinal Research - here the study of problem or a phenomenon is conducted over a stretch of time. Conclusive results are obtained after observing their behaviour over a considerable stretch of time.

CONCLUDING NOTE - 
Research can be classified on the basis of 4 dimensions - 
a. Awareness 
b. Targeting
c. Retention 
d. Idea generation.
  • Advertising and public relation research comes under - Awareness.
  • Applied, marketing, consumer, motivation research comes under - Target.
  • Longitudinal and simulation research comes under - Retention.
  • Product and advertising research comes under - Idea generation.
